Catholic Charities Branch III
|
In August of 2007 a group of energetic and enthusiastic volunteers from IC began serving breakfast to approximately 200 hungry people! On the second Saturday of each month this group of volunteers gets together to prepare and serve 40 pounds of scrambled eggs, 24 pounds of sausage links, 40 pounds of sliced peaches, 200 pieces of blueberry bread and 8 gallons of orange juice. We also take down dozens of home baked cookies and bars generously donated by our parishioners.
Branch III of Catholic Charities not only provides breakfast and lunch but also offers services such as hygiene maintenance, employment resources and access to social workers and nurses to people experiencing homelessness. Bordering Minneapolis’ Elliot Park and Phillips neighborhood, Branch III is open six days each week.
The population consists of mostly single adults experiencing homelessness, who are unemployed or underemployed, and who are seeking jobs and housing. The majority of the clients are males aged 35 – 50. Clients typically face a range of barriers to employment including basic support and housing, mental and chemical health, and social barriers.
Each month we need 7 to 8 volunteers to help prepare and serve the meal. We meet at Immaculate Conception and car pool to the location. Consider volunteering with your family or gather a group of friends and sign up for a month! It’s a great opportunity to develop new skills, strengthen your family and friendships, and support our community.
